THE SUN HAS SET
The sun has set and the long grass now
Waves drearily in the evening wind
And the wild bird has flown from that old grey stone
In some warm nook a couch to find
In all the lonely landscape round
I see no sight and hear no sound
Except the wind that far away
Comes sighing o’er the heathy sea
夕陽西下
夕陽西下,
晚風中,搖曳著無精打采的長草。
古老的灰岩後,飛出一隻野鳥,
尋覓著溫暖偏僻的角落,去歇腳。
荒涼的野地裏,我舉目四望,
不見人影,也不聞人語。
隻有遠遠的風兒,
從石南的海洋上掠過,不住歎息。
THE OLD STOIC
Riches I hold in light esteem;
And Love I laugh to scorn;
And lust of fame was but a dream
That vanished with the morn:
And if I pray, the only prayer
That moves my lips for me
Is, ‘Leave the heart that now I bear,
And give me liberty!’
Yes, as my swift days near their goal,
’Tis all that I implore;
In life and death, a chainless soul,
With courage to endure.
淡泊堅韌的老派人
我鄙視金錢,
我嘲笑愛情。
浮名不過夢幻,
天亮後杳無蹤影。
我若祈禱,隻有一句禱文,
能令我開口:
“別擾亂我此刻的心神,
賜給我自由!”
是的,我短暫的生命已近終點,
這是我唯一的祈求。
無論生死,但願靈魂了無羈絆,
又有勇氣承受!
THE NIGHT IS DARKENING ROUND ME
The night is darkening round me
The wild winds coldly blow
But a tyrant spell has bound me
And I cannot cannot go
The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow
And the storm is fast descending
And yet I cannot go
Clouds beyond clouds above me
Wastes beyond wastes below
